This was one of the most interesting orphanages we have visited. Despite the fact that all of the children in this orphanage are disabled—many severely—and cannot care for themselves, there was still a feeling of family and hope. Vidrare is filled to capacity. Twenty-eight children are confined to beds and 30 individuals are over 18 years of age, but there are no other positive housing options for the older ones. During summer months, bedridden children are confined to rooms that are stifling in the summer heat. The only solution is to provide air conditioners at a cost of $1,000 for 3 or 4 units.
The children are housed in an old, run-down building, which is not equipped for people with disabilities. This orphanage is constantly short on food and fuel, although they do run a greenhouse in an attempt to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for themselves during the summer. There is also a mini-farm with pigs and chickens that provides some food. Like many other orphanages for infants or children with special needs, diapering and waterproof mattress pads remain a huge problem, especially because these children are older. This home has one rehabilitation therapist, but needs to hire an additional physical therapist. They also seek to hire a logopedist (speech therapist.) Our Grandmother Nurturing Program is very desirable for this orphanage. (See Grandmother Nurturing Program)
These children desperately need another committed sponsor to help make positive changes in their living conditions.
