Youth Service Project Benefits Resource Center

The youth in the Kirtland stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held a service project in July to benefit the Resource Center. Three hundred youth gathered during a conference and made puzzles and lacing boards, assembled flannel board kits, painted toy cars, sewed art smocks, and put together educational bags which were taken to Bulgaria in September. The project was so successful that a second service activity is planned for December to assemble Child Care Kits.

One Heart Bulgaria sister Foundation organized in Bulgaria in March, 2003.

One Heart Bulgaria Founder Glyn Barker and co-founder Deborah Dushku traveled to Bulgaria in March to set up a sister foundation to more effectively meet the needs of the organization. While there they visited participating orphanages, made contact with interested directors, and met with Sabina Sabeva, the minister of child protective services for Bulgaria. Requested items were delivered to Orphanage #7 and to Sveta Paraskeva, and the first formal board meeting of One Heart Bulgaria was held. Glyn and Deborah also met with other charitable organizations and discussed ways the Opportunity Center could be useful in promoting cooperation among humanitarian groups in Bulgaria.

The conference was sponsored by the McLean Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Also addressing the conference was Ann Santini, Director of the International Affairs Office for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Ludmila Dimitrova, the first press secretary for the Bulgarian Embassy in Washington D.C., also attended. After the speakers, the participants worked together assembling hygiene and school kits for the Church's Humanitarian Center and making quilts, wall-hangings, and toys for the orphanages sponsored by One Heart Bulgaria.
