Slaveikov Orphanage Update 2011
Dramatic changes have taken place at this orphanage since our efforts first began in 2006. As you can read in our previous reports, this was an institution poorly run, under funded and under staffed with between 165 and 200 children between the ages of 7 and 18 years.

When we first entered this orphanage, we found it in complete disrepair with broken bedroom windows and doors, damaged floors and ceiling, and bathrooms in shambles–not to mention barely functioning plumbing. The building was cold and dark and the children ran around untended, hungry, and mostly unsupervised.

The orphanage was so large and in such desperate need of help, that it would cost thousands and thousands of dollars just to make a dent. Because of the high costs involved, most organizations would not attempt to help Slaveikov, even though they were concerned about the children there. There was simply so much to do! It was over-whelming.

One Heart Bulgaria, with the help of generous sponsorships and donations, was able to work to improve conditions at Slaveikov little by little. It took years, but if you entered Slaveikov today, you would find it a much different place than when we first entered its halls.

Currently, there are only 58 children at Slaveikov and the orphanage has been re-organized into family-like units. Each unit has a kitchen, dining area and bathroom. We know that many children were transferred to other orphanages. Many NGO’s funded repairs after One Heart Bulgaria received recognition for our massive project to replace windows, broken doors and faulty bathroom fixtures. We also created a library with wonderful books, desks, chairs and couches, a computer and software. It is a wonderful and cozy space for learning. We equipped the laundry room with new washers and dryers and the kitchen with new dinnerware and some appliances. The main lobby walls have been decorated with paintings and large mirrors. Our field director’s reports now state that this orphanage is in good shape and order.

We still supply hygiene products and fund small projects periodically. We also are continuing to employ a doctor to give medical care to the children. A recent report showed that he treated 27 children in one month. We are searching for a qualified folk dance instructor to hold classes for the children.
