Pravets is home to a wonderful group of children. Many are quite talented — one is an artistic prodigy and another is a talented singer. The children are encouraged to pursue their talents and interests. There are 14 girls and 41 boys. Iskra was the music teacher for two years, hired by One Heart Bulgaria. She has recently moved to Vidrare Orphanage; however, OHB is in the process of hiring another teacher. Many of these children have music and singing talents.
The entire home is heated with homemade wood burning stoves. However, new heating equipment is scheduled for installation in 2008 by the government. This orphanage, also known as Razliv Orphanage, is located 27 miles from the towns of Pravets and Botevgrad and 90 km northeast from Sofia. It was founded in 1962. The facilities are old and not in good shape. The children are living in common rooms, girls and boys separate. This orphanage needs to be restructured in order to meet the EU requirements for family-like units. Nadya Stefanova, the new orphanage director, tells us, “The orphanage manages to keep going thanks to continuous donors, sponsors and friends who help them with food, sanitary materials, clothing, shoes, school materials, etc.” She is very interested in our Opportunity Homes Program because 5-6 teen orphans leave the orphanage each year and need housing plus assistance to transition into Bulgarian society.
