How a Sponsorship Works
A One Heart Bulgaria sponsorship is equal to $50 per child per year. For an orphanage with 40 children, a full sponsorship for one year equals $2,000 or about $167 per month. Because many orphanages have over 40 children -- some even have more than 200 -- we offer half, quarter, and in some cases, eighth sponsorships.
Working together with the One Heart Bulgaria Foundation director, the orphanage director indicates what he or she would like to use the money for. However, it must be used within certain parameters: for food, hygiene needs, access to medical care, medicine, and in certain cases, to help pay for additional personnel, such as a therapist or counselor.
Once One Heart Bulgaria has established a relationship with an orphanage, and usually after a sponsor has been found, we encourage the orphanage to send us project proposals for projects which are not covered by the sponsorship itself. These projects are offered first to the sponsor and then to the general public. They range from requests for $200 for summer camp programs up to thousands of dollars for specialized equipment or renovations. Some of the most exciting projects involve initiatives by the children themselves, such as the tailor's workshop and the bakery at Olga Skobeleva in Plovdiv.
Becoming a One Heart Bulgaria Orphanage Sponsor
If you are interested in becoming a One Heart Bulgaria Sponsor, please take a look at the list of orphanages. Once you choose an orphanage and a level that is right for you, contact our sponsorship director, Donna Dushku, to set up the most convenient donation plan. When the sponsorship is established, we will begin sending regular updates on the children and conditions in "your" orphanage. If circumstances permit, we try to include pictures, photographs, and other mementos from the children and the workers.
